Being on the Big Island (Hawai’i) has not just been an amazing experience for me but also a privilege. A privilege that I am most grateful for, especially around this time of the year. The Big Island has a numerous amount of history and culture but it is also home to the most southern point of the United States. Ka Lae is protected and registered under the National Historic Landmark District with the name South Point Complex. There are many ways of getting to the southern point, if you’re on the Big Island itself it will take you a little under two hours to reach the destination from either Kona or Hilo airport but worth the drive.
One of the many great things about going to south point is the cliff jumping opportunity that it provides to all its visitors, if you’re brave enough to take the leap. It’s about a 40 feet jump to the water from the main jumping point (old wooden alter) on the edge. There are four ways to get back up when I was there, 1. The metal ladder that swings as you climb, 2. Climb the back of the cave using the rocks, 3. Chain link acting as a rope for people with good upper body strength, and 4. Another old ladder that is also happens to metal that seems as though that at any given moment, it could possibly collapse.
This place is perfect for those seeking adventure and excitement, also a good place for scenic photo opportunities. I did manage to get some footage of my GoPro when I attached it to my chest to capture that moment and even though the footage is good it still isn’t the same as going for yourself and experiencing first hand what a life rushing chance it is. Plus, afterwards on your way back, if headed towards Hilo, there is an amazing bakery that just adds more excitement to your experience.
